Purpose
The department was established to assist the Registrar in securing in the public interest the highest standards in the practice of pharmacy in Ghana and advise the Registrar on issues related to the regulation of pharmaceutical care provision through regular policy reviews, planning, investigation of complaints, enforcement of standards, monitoring and evaluation of all regulatory and enforcement activities in the country.
Functions of the Department
- To coordinate with the various department for policy formulation and review for the Pharmacy Council.
- Initiate and contribute actively to the development of Pharmacy Council policies and guidelines on national inspections.
- Ensure harmonization of the operational plans and budgets of the departments and regional offices of Pharmacy Council.
- Ensure the provision of adequate logistics for the department.
- Establish and evaluate the performance standards of the regional offices.
- Ensure efficient co-ordination and linkages between Head office and regional office operations.
- Supervise and co-ordinate the operations of the regional offices.
- Ensure proper monitoring and evaluation of Pharmacy Council’s operations, viz; inspections, education & training, licensing & registration, and enforcement etc.
- Monitor training institutions and programmes for training pharmaceutical care providers.
- Ensure proper investigation of complaints relating to pharmacy practice.
- Ensure maintenance and enforcement of pharmacy practice standards.
- Collate, screen and manage the inventories of all documents for disciplinary actions.
- Keep and update records on regulations and procedures for disciplinary actions, sanctions and penalties.
- Prepare working documents and plan work schedules for Disciplinary Committee and General Purpose Committee.
- Provide assistance to the regional managers to ensure efficient regional operations including inspections.
- Provide timely, up-to-date and relevant technical advice to the Registrar.
- Ensure that all regional managers abide by the Standard Operating Procedures and Guidelines for pharmaceutical premises inspections.
- Supervise and monitor staff schedules and performance within the department.
- Compile, analyse and submit periodic reports on the state of pharmaceutical services and inspections in the regions on time to the Registrar.
- Ensure the appropriate collection, storage, processing and utilisation of data in the department to inform management and decisions.
- Initiate the development and ensure the implementation of innovations that improve the quality of inspections in accordance with Pharmacy Council requirements.
- Ensure that confiscated medicines are disposed of in accordance with established procedures.
- Ensure the planning and conduct of the induction of new staff posted to the department and serve as a site for pharmacy internship training.
- Ensure that interns/trainees posted to the department are adequately trained.
- Serve as the custodian of all Pharmacy Council’s policies.
