The Pharmacy Council has donated a quantity of assorted medicines valued at GH¢ 24,500.00 to inmates of the Nsawam medium security prison and the Ho prison in the Eastern and Volta regions respectively. The donation was in response to appeals made by the prison authorities to individuals and corporate bodies to contribute towards the health needs of the inmates. The Acting Deputy Registrar, Mr. Alexander Adjei, who presented the items on behalf of the Council to the Nsawam prisons, said the gesture would be sustained and extended to other public institutions in other parts of the Country.

An assistant Director of Prisons Mrs. Elizabeth Adombire receiving the drugs on behalf of the Ghana Prison’s Service thanked the Council for the gesture which would go a long way to assist the health needs of the inmates who are prone to some diseases and infections due usually to overcrowding; some of the diseases often complained about include malaria, skin diseases and chest infection.

The Volta Regional Manager of the Pharmacy Council, Mr. Christian Quao presented the medicines to Chief Superintendent Wisdom of the Ho Prisons. The donated medicines were confiscated from unauthorised dealers. Officials of the Prison Service used the occasion to remind the public that although inmates were people who had wronged society and had thus been incarcerated, they still remained Ghanaians and must therefore be given the needed assistance for proper reformation.
