Purpose
The department ensures continuous development of knowledge and skills of pharmaceutical care providers in line with existing international standards. This is achieved through the development, organisation and implementation of regular, effective and relevant continuing professional education and training of pharmacists, other pharmaceutical care providers and trainees, as well as, accreditation of training programmes and institutions.
Functions of the Unit
- Design, maintain and supervise a good quality internship training nationwide.
- Provide timely, up-to-date and relevant technical advice on education and training issues to the Registrar and Regional Managers of the Pharmacy Council.
- Evaluate applications from pharmacy graduates and foreign practising pharmacists for internship training and/or registration in Ghana.
- Post all interns for internship training.
- Initiate, develop and review the training guidelines for pharmacists, pharmacy interns and other pharmaceutical care providers, as the case may be.
- Coordinate the organisation of the Ghana Pharmacy Council’s Professional Qualifying Examinations.
- Ensure regular revision and update of examination syllabus, content specifications, procedures, structure, database, grading, and release of results.
- Assist in the maintenance of the Register of Pharmacists.
- Develop examination review materials and libraries.
- Design and review accreditation tools for training institutions and training programmes.
- Assist in pre-accreditation inspections of training institutions and programmes for training pharmacists, pharmacy interns and other pharmaceutical care providers.
- Liaise between Pharmacy Council and pharmacy student associations (including leadership of interns association).
- Provide timely, up-to-date and relevant technical advice to the Registrar.
- Ensure the availability of adequate numbers, quality and continuous development of staff to meet the needs of the Education and Training Department of Pharmacy Council.
- Ensure the availability of adequate numbers, quality and continuous development of preceptors to meet the needs of internship training.
- Prepare and submit periodic reports on the activities of the unit on time to the Registrar.
- Ensure the appropriate collection, storage, processing and utilisation of data in the Department to inform management decisions.
- Ensure the planning and conduct of the induction of new staff posted to the department and serve as a site for pharmacy internship training.
