EDUCATION AND TRAINING DEPARTMENT

The Departmant was set up to oversee and coordinate all the education and training activities of the Pharmacy Council. According to the Council's strategic plan, the core functions of the Department are to:
  1. Develop, organise and ensure implementation of effective and relevant continuing professional education and training for pharmacists and other pharmaceutical care providers
  2. Monitor, supervise and ensure the quality of training of pharmacy interns
  3. Develop, review and upgrade the training guidelines for pharmacists, pharmacy interns and other pharmaceutical care providers
  4. Organise and coordinate the Ghana Pharmacy Professional Qualifying Examination
  5. Ensure regular revision and update of examination syllabus, content specifications, procedures, structure database, grading, release of results and training of examiners for the Council's examinations
  6. Organise the registration and induction of newly qualified pharmacists
  7. Assist in the maintenance of the register of pharmacists
  8. Develop examination review materials and libraries
  9. Coordinate the certification and re-certification of pharmacists and other pharmaceutical care providers
  10. Design and monitor accreditation of training institutions and programmes for pharmacists, pharmacy interns and other pharmaceutical care providers.

Professional Development


Continuing Education (CE) For Registered Pharmacists:

This section will shows Council's programmes for Continuous Education. For now it could have past programmes and developments for the re-launch of the programmed. It will also provide guidelines to participate in such programmers and announce for future CE programmes. This forum will also be used when Council gets to the stage of online CE Programmes and minimum points build up from CE programmes as an eligibility criteria for re-licensure.

 

Technologists & Technicians:

The Council's Programmes in this direction, having in mind developments of registering this group of service providers. It will also provide guidelines to participate in such programmes and announcements for future CE programmes.

Licensed Chemical Sellers:

 

The licensed chemical seller is the lowest level of pharmaceutical care providers who is allowed to supply by retail only over-the-counter medicines. The educational qualification for the license is a minimum of General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level or Senior Secondary School Certificate of Education or the equivalent of any of the above. There is therefore no requirement for a pre-health educational training to enable one to apply for the licence.

Medicine Counter Assistants:

 

The Medicine Counter Assistant (MCA) is a lower level pharmaceutical care provider who is allowed to assist the pharmacist in the supply of medicines. The educational qualification for entry into a training institution is a minimum of General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level or Senior Secondary School Certificate of Education or the equivalent of any of the above.
The training of MCA's’ is governed by a policy i.e. Accreditation Policy on Training of Medicine Counter Assistants’;

Training Modules:

 

Here a detailed outline of modules and information that housemen will be required to know before their professional exams. Both Hospital and Community pharmacy modules will be posted. The preceptors and intern manual if ready will be posted, as well as assessment of intern and preceptors forms. read more

Registration Procedures( GPPQE) Guidelines for the registration of the GPPQE will be outlined here. This will include requirements, fees,
and procedures.

Examination Dates & Venues Lists of specific dates and venues of the GPPQE. Dates and venues of the induction ceremony will also be posted online.

Taking the GPPQE Advice pertaining to how to study for the exams, preparing for the interview part, the format of the question and if possible, sample questions.

Examination Result The final results of the GPPQE will be posted here.

Training Institution

Pharmacists Lists of training institutions in the country that trains newly pharmacists (namely KNUST). A link to the faculty of the page on the KNUST web site will be provided.

 Pharmacy Technicians Pre-Deploma Training Institution
Similar to the above, the page will explain the role of dispensing technicians in the grand scheme of things in the pharmaceutical industry. There will also be mention of the training provided at Kumasi Polytechnic and a link to their site if available.
