Zocor is a medication that is commonly used by individuals with high cholesterol levels. This medication is also known as Simvastatin in the medical industry.
How it works
Similar to any other ‘statin’ medication, Zocor works by reducing the bad cholesterol produced by the liver. This enables the medication to prevent various diseases that affect the human heart.
Zocor is primarily consumed to lower bed cholesterol and increase the good one. This enables the medication to protect the individual from various heart-related illnesses such as strokes and heart attacks.
The dosage will be determined by a physician based on a number of factors. This includes your age, medical condition and the way in which you respond to this treatment. For per dose, you must not take more than 40mg of Zocor, unless you are instructed by your doctor to do otherwise.
Do not increase your dose more than this. Doing so will not help you to recover sooner. On the contrary, it can worsen your health condition. This can, in fact, increase the risk of side effects. In order to benefit highly from this drug, take Zocor as often as possible. It is best not to miss your doses, accidently or intentionally.
It can take up to four weeks for this medication to work. Until then, you need to follow your physician’s advice regarding dieting and exercise. If you do not combine these two with the drug, consuming Zocor will not be effective.
Although there are no major side effects for this medication, there are one or two problems which you might experience. You might experience confusion and memory problems in rare occasions. Your diabetes can worsen during the course of the treatment. You might experience muscle weakness suddenly. It is also possible for you to develop liver problems. Common signs of this condition are yellowing eyes, dark urine and severe abdominal pain. Although it is rare, there is a small chance for you to develop severe allergic reactions to this medication as well.
The following safety instructions must be followed strictly during the entire course of the treatment.
Before you start the treatment, inform your physician if you are allergic to Zocor or any of its ingredients.
Speak to your physician if you have a history of liver or kidney disease.
Reduce alcohol consumption. When it is combined with Zocor, alcohol can increase the likelihood of developing liver problems.
Senior citizens will be more vulnerable towards certain side effects such as, muscle weakness. Therefore, be very careful with the doses.
Do not accidentally or intentionally skip your doses. Taking the medication at the same time every day will help you to remember your dose.
It is not recommended to use this medication during the period of pregnancy. Consuming Zocor during the pregnancy period can directly harm the unborn child. Therefore, avoid this medication if you become pregnant during the treatment period.
Although it is not known whether this medication can be passed on to a child through breast milk, it has been found that Zocor can affect infants negatively. Therefore, it is better to avoid nursing your child when you are taking this medication.
