Toprol XL is a drug approved to treat high blood pressure and heart conditions related to hypertension.
How It Works
The active ingredient in Toprol XL is metoprolol succinate, which belongs to a group of drugs known as beta blockers. These drugs can cause a mechanism of action in your body that causes the blood vessels to dilate and relieve the pressure. High blood pressure puts extra work on the heart. When the heart is strained, it can lead to heart failure, among other serious conditions. Taking a medication like Toprol XL will prevent a situation like that.
Toprol XL is mainly prescribed to treat high blood pressure. It may also be used to relieve chest pain (angina) and the risk of heart failure. When high blood pressure is not stabilized, it can lead to stroke or kidney failure as well.
Your doctor will prescribe you the correct amount of Toprol XL. Dosage varies from patient to patient depending on a variety of factors.
Read the patient information leaflet provided with the package before use. Take this drug exactly as the doctor prescribes it to you. Do not change the dosage or discontinue Toprol XL without instructions from your doctor. Suddenly stopping Toprol XL may cause your condition to get worse.
Toprol XL is usually prescribed to be taken once a day. Take this medication the same time each day to avoid missing doses.
Take a missed dose soon as you remember, unless it is time for the next dose. Don’t take two or more doses of this drug at the same time. If you accidentally consume more Toprol XL per dose than you have been prescribed, call a poison control center.
Swallow Toprol XL tablets whole without crushing or breaking in any way. Chewing the tablets will cause the dose to be released at once, possibly making side effects worse.
If you are prescribed Toprol XL for chest pain, you must follow the regular dosage schedule. Toprol XL does not stop chest pain as it occurs.
Toprol XL may cause the following side effects:
Shortness of breath
Slow heart rate
Side effects may differ depending on the conditions you are being treated for.
Side effects are usually mild and disappear in a matter of days. If side effects are severe, or do not go away, immediately call your doctor.
Do not take Toprol XL if you are allergic to any of the ingredients listed on the label.
Speak to your doctor about your medical history before use. Certain medical conditions make Toprol XL unsafe to use.
Toprol XL is not recommended to use among pregnant or breastfeeding women or women who plan to get pregnant soon.
If Toprol XL causes dizziness, do not drive, operate heavy machinery or otherwise engage in an activity that may pose a risk to your well being.
If you experience diarrhea as a side effect when taking Toprol XL, drink plenty of liquids to stay hydrated.
